The future of VoIP technology is an interesting topic, and a topic that’s hard to pin down at that. There is no way of knowing how the future landscape of VoIP will look, but we can make predictions based on what we do know.

Future VoIP Technology: 5G Networks

To start, one of the best predictions we can make about the future of VoIP technology is regarding the network infrastructure. Pretty soon all networks will be running a 5G connection.

Now, this is something that is already happening, and will eventually become the norm. Many mobile phone carrier networks already have or are beginning the process of integrating 5G networks into their services.

It’s safe to assume that many major VoIP providers will follow suit as well; to strengthen their networks, and provide better service to their clients.

Future VoIP Technology: Unified Communication

Next, another future VoIP technology we might see a wide adoption of in the near future is Unified Communication. Again, much like what we’re seeing with 5G networks, Unified Communication is seeing some early uses already.

However, what is Unified Communication? It’s simply the combination of various digital communications methods into one. This can include things such as: voice calls, texts, emails, and so on.

Now, there are already some platforms out there that do similar things, many of which were created and adopted for the pandemic. However, with companies continuing to adopt work-from-home teams, and many employees preferring to work- from-home permanently, there is definitely room for further development, and wider adoption for something like this.

Ultimately, I believe many VoIP providers will take advantage of this emerging technology, and integrate it into their existing service offerings.

Future VoIP Technology: AI Integration

AI and AI technology have been in the mainstream eye for a long time. After all, it feels like there is a new AI based voice assistant, or chat bot with everything nowadays. And that’s the whole point. Many industries, including VoIP are finding new ways to integrate AI into their businesses, products, and services.

I mean, who wouldn’t want to make their life easier by having AI perform menial tasks we hate doing? I know I wouldn’t.

AI for VoIP specifically would be quite interesting. For example, instead of someone calling into a customer service number to ask a general question, an AI assistant could answer it for them. This would negate the need for a call agent to waste their time on a call like that entirely.

Additionally, AI could be great for call routing. Instead of someone having to manually pick up the phone every time someone calls, an AI bot could determine which calls require immediate attention, which ones could be handled later and sent to voicemail, and which calls such as a telemarketer are not worth picking up at all.

There are many more examples of how AI could benefit VoIP technology, but these are just a few.

Future VoIP Technology: Improved Security

Like all forms of technology, VoIP is vulnerable to cyberattacks, and threats. The future of VoIP technologies stands to be no different. If anything, it might get worse.

The trade-off that comes with new and improved features VoIP could see is, it could become an even greater target for hackers and cybercriminals. More features means more complexity, which means that maintaining a strong level of security will be a much greater challenge.

That’s why, it’s almost a given that VoIP will continue to see improvements in this area. From higher security firewalls, to two-factor authentication methods for phones, to AI monitoring of phone networks. The sky really is the limit.

Ending Thoughts

As you can see, the future of VoIP looks bright. While we can’t know for sure what exactly the future of VoIP will look like. We can predict based on what we know.

5G networks, Unified Communication, AI integration, and Improved Security are all things that VoIP has already begun, or will at least dabble in at some point. To what degree, we can’t be sure, but there will undoubtedly be changes in the VoIP technology landscape as time goes on.
